Alaine HandaSAS Alum and her dance company performing in Chameleon

January 2008 Visitors
This year's first visitors were Carol Root and her daughter Lindsay '03. We celebrated the new year by taking this fantastic picture and sending the lovely ladies home with many SAS souvenirs. Lindsay was able to catch up with her sisters, Alison '05 and Megan '00, and other friends at the Young Alumni Reunion at the American Club on December 19th. To see here to see photos of the event.

January 8: Angie Jones '95 and her husband Chris were in town in between trips to Australia and the Philippines. Angie and Chris, who were married in May of 2007, now live in Austin, Texas. Although she did not attend classes on the Woodlands campus, Angie had been back to Singapore for the 2006 50th Anniversary Celebration and had even spoken to a science class during her visit about her work as a veterinarian. The students were still away for the holiday break, so Angie and Chris enjoyed a quiet walk around the campus!

January 24th: Two very hot ladies and a tiny hot baby dropped by today! Literally steaming hot, Amy Bascom (Pack) and her mom Leslie Pack had walked to the Woodlands campus with Amy's fourth son Joshua from the nearby Marsiling MRT station in the hot Singapore weather! Coming from temperate Utah, the ladies were adjusting to the tropical Singapore heat while accompanying Amy's father Mr. Pack on a two-week work trip.

Amy, the oldest of the four Pack children to attend SAS in the early nineties, was in the last class to graduate from the King's Road campus before SAS moved to the Woodlands campus. She and her mom were thrilled to see that some of the same teachers were still here. They were wowed by the size of both the campus and the student body.

During their visit, they were able to visit with Superintendent Brent Mutsch and the ladies at the Booster Booth in the High School. They checked out the high school art projects and then headed for lunch in Mr. Ho's cafeteria. Amy used to love Mr. Ho's pita bread, was happy to hear that Mr. Ho still makes it. Leslie was especially interested in the recipe.

Leslie was interested to visit with the ladies in the Intermediate School library, because she was a big volunteer at the Ulu Pandan library. She was excited by the prospect of seeing some familiar faces, as many of the librarians from that time are still working at SAS!

The ladies happily filled me in on what their SAS friends and family were up to. This was the family's first trip back to Singapore since they left in 1996. At that time, Mr. Pack set up a DuPont plant on Jurong Island. He was surprised to see that the island is now accessible by car, as he remembered taking a boat to the plant every day.

The younger Pack siblings did not graduate from SAS, but remember their days here vividly. Younger sister Melanie has recently gotten married and had a baby in December 2007. Another younger sister, Laura, was married in 2007 as well, and is now finishing college in Utah. Youngest brother Jason, who attended Ulu Pandan from kindergarten to fourth grade, is now working in Utah.

Amy is married to Adam Bascom, who works for the US postal service, and together they have four sons, including Joshua, the only child accompanying Amy on this trip. Last year, Amy took her boys to Sea World to visit with Tracey (Wimer) Shepard and her kids, which she said was a fantastic time. She also keeps in touch with Pam (Conavay) Lindholm, who was married last year; April Hixson-Goldsmith, who had a baby girl in September, Carrie (Taylor) Mack, who was married in October 2007, and Greg Hart, who got married and had a baby in 2007.

Once she got home, Amy sent us these adorable pictures of the day at SAS. You'll see Leslie with Kathy Tan, her son's first grade teacher, and darling Joshua checking Kathy out at the far left. In the middle is Amy and Joshua with Linda Clarke, who showed the ladies around and spent most of the afternoon catching up with them. On the same hallway as Linda's classroom is Paula Silverman's classroom. Paula and Amy are pictured together on the far right.

Amy also sent us these two photos from home. The one on the left is the Bascom family: Amy, her husband Adam and their four boys: Nathan, 8, Zach, 6, Aaron, 3, and Joshua, 7 months. The photo on the left is of the Bascom family with Tracey (Wimer) Shepard and her family: front row: Adam and Amy Bascom, Tracey and Jeremiah Shepard (holding Miah), back row: Aaron and Nathan Bascom, Taylor Shepard, Zach Bascom).
