Alaine HandaSAS Alum and her dance company performing in Chameleon

Brian Linton, Class of 2005
In April 2008, Brian Linton '05 won $30,000 in a business plan competition at Temple University. He wrote in to tell us about the competition and his winning business plan for a coffee shop he now calls Organic Junction.

Brian writes:

The Temple Business Plan competition is the year-end contest for the Fox School of Business at Temple University. The contest, which was re-branded this year as the Be Your Own Boss Bowl to reach more students outside of the business school, was open to all Temple undergraduate, graduate, faculty, and alumni submissions.

The preliminary round involved writing a full business plan for a company. From the business plans, 10 finalists were chosen (5 undergraduate, 5 graduate/faculty/alumni). The 10 finalists had to present in front of a panel of Philadelphia business professionals (mostly C-level executives of medium to large corporations).

Prizes were awarded to 1st and 2nd place from the undergraduate category, 1st and 2nd from the graduate/faculty/alumni category, and an overall grand prize was chosen from everyone. The business plan competition took place over the course of the entire school year, so I was honored to win the grand prize.

It was the thing I really needed to propel my business career forward as I graduate this summer and begin working on my business ventures full time. In the wake of the winning this competition I have had the opportunity to network and meet with so many people.

The prize was over $30,000 ($10,000 cash, $7,000 microsoft products of my choice, and $15,000 legal and accounting services). I have begun using the services I won to set up the nitty-gritty details of my new venture, now called Organic Junction. The prize will all be put towards starting the business with the business plan I used to win the competition.
